Case study
DebtDetector
Debt paperwork is scary and easy to get wrong. DebtDetector walks people through the steps in plain language, with honest limits, so they can act instead of freezing.
The problem
Debt workflows punish confusion twice: first with complexity, then with consequences when someone checks the wrong box.
People often land on the site already stressed. The tone had to be serious without sounding like a late night ad.
The challenge
Language has to stay careful. Flows have to work under stress. The product cannot promise outcomes it does not control.
We also needed a codebase a small team could keep improving.
What we did
We mapped the journey as a sequence of decisions instead of a wall of education, then built screens that answered the next question people actually asked.
Uploads, confirmations, and “what happens next” used the same patterns so anxiety did not turn into endless backtracking.
We kept the surface area small enough that we could iterate quickly once we saw which explanations reduced support noise.
Outcome
People could finish steps with less second guessing about whether they were “doing it right.”
The product stays grounded: clarity first, not hype.
